THE ARIZONA BLACK BAR’S 2015 EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY AWARDS – CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The Arizona Black Bar has created the ABB Excellence in Diversity Awards to recognize attorneys, law firms, corporations, academic institutions and other agencies who go above and beyond to promote, implement and advance diversity and inclusion in the Arizona legal profession. The awards will be presented at the 2015 Hayzel B. Daniels Scholarship Dinner on October 22, 2015 at the Phoenix Art Museum.

 

Awardees will be selected by the ABB Awards Selection Committee which consists of ABB members, members of our sister bar associations-Arizona Women Lawyer’s Association, Asian Bar Association, Los Abogados, the Hispanic Bar Association, the Native American Bar Association and community members.

 

Our 2015 Selection Committee members are: ABB members-David Allen, Esq., U.S. Immigration Judge Wendell Hollis and Phoenix Municipal Court Judge Carol Scott Berry; Sister Bar members-Hon. Roxanne Song Ong (ret.), Ms. Paige Martin, Esq., Hon. Alisha Villa, Diandra Benally, Esq., and ASU Office of University Affairs Community Relations Director Kenja Hassan.

The deadline for submission of nominations has been extended to September 15, 2015. Winners will be notified by October 1, 2015. Please mail the completed nomination form to David J. ABB Law Firm/Corporate/Public Agency Diversity Award

Presented to an Arizona law firm, corporation, academic institution, non-profit or public agency that demonstrates achievement and sustained commitment to diversity and inclusion in the legal profession for racially and ethnically diverse lawyers in Arizona. Special consideration will be given to signatories of the State Bar of Arizona Statement of Goals for Increasing Minority and Women Representation however recipient need not be a signatory.

 

The ABB Selection Committee will consider the following criteria in selecting the recipient:

  • Employs a diverse workforce, promotes and encourages racially and ethnically diverse attorneys furthering diversity and inclusion in the Arizona legal profession.

  • Specific efforts to advance and promote the full and equal participation of racially and ethnically diverse lawyers in the Arizona legal profession

  • Active participation and leadership in minority bar organizations and community events that promote diversity and inclusion

  • Demonstrated corporate responsibility by devoting resources to minority organizations for the improvement diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. Activities may include: Financial support of non-profit minority organizations boards and committees, Pro bono services benefitting the advancement of diversity and inclusion, sponsorship of minority community events that encourage diversity and inclusion of law students and attorneys or presentations and/or panelists at programs geared to increase the number of minority attorneys in Arizona

 

ABB Individual Diversity Award

Presented to an Arizona lawyer who has demonstrated significant leadership, dedication and commitment to full and equal participation of racially and ethnically diverse attorneys within the Arizona legal profession. The ABB Selection Committee will consider the following in selecting the recipient:

  • Influenced or mentored racially and ethnically diverse individuals to pursue and/or succeed in the Arizona legal profession

  • Regularly reaches out to diverse attorneys by mentoring, coaching and providing direction and encouragement for promotion in the Arizona legal profession

  • Community service activities that encourage, promote and broaden the diversity pipeline from law schools, colleges, high schools and community organizations

  • Established or spearheaded the creation of a program or group within the individual’s law firm or the legal profession to form and implement steps to further the cause of diversity and inclusion in the Arizona legal profession

 

ABB Rising Star Award

Presented to an Arizona Black Bar member with less than five years of experience who has demonstrated dedication, high achievement and had a significant impact on promoting diversity and inclusion the Arizona legal profession. The ABB Selection Committee will consider the following in selecting the recipient:

  • Record of accomplishments and contributions to the Arizona Black Bar

  • Served as mentor, role-model, presenter or speaker to high school, college or law students to promote diversity and inclusion in the Arizona legal profession

  • Active member of State Bar Committees, Arizona Supreme Court Committees, Legal Service Boards or other pro bono work

  • Significant accomplishments within the Arizona legal profession which impacted diversity and inclusion in the Arizona legal profession
